Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao’s ears tingled, and her little heart skipped a beat with a sudden thump.
Xiao Heng was wrapped in a silver fox cloak, its soft fur gently swaying in the cold wind and brushing lightly against his handsome face.
Though it had only been two months since they last saw each other, he seemed to have grown taller and more refined, his features now even more exquisite and strikingly handsome; his gaze exuding the composed nobility of someone born into imperial royalty, yet without the slightest hint of arrogance.
Behind him, the vast expanse of snow stretched endlessly, blanketing the world in pure white like a painting of rivers and mountains, but not even such a breathtaking scene could outshine his elegance.
Gu Jiao stared at him in a daze, stunned, “Why are you here? Didn’t you return to Shengdu?”
The news she had received was that the Eldest Imperial Grandson had finished negotiating the peace talks and was already on his way back to the capital.
Xiao Heng placed the wooden bucket on the well’s edge, one hand holding the handle while the other gently rubbed the top of her head. “If I’d told you in advance, how could I surprise you?”
Very well.
So now flirting didn’t even come with a warning anymore.
He was really getting bolder and bolder.
Gu Jiao’s gaze dropped to the hand he used to lift the wooden handle. She had seen clearly just now how he had hoisted this large bucket of water with ease.
“Hm, even his strength has improved…”
Gu Jiao mumbled quietly to herself.
His arm strength had already reached that of a grown man, and even his breath and voice had changed. They were now deeper, more composed, and mature.
Xiao Heng gently pinched her delicate, slightly chilled chin. “You’ve lost weight again. Are you not eating properly?”
Gu Jiao answered earnestly, “I’ve been eating well. I eat a lot every day.”
That was the truth. To replenish her energy, she hadn’t held back at all when it came to food. It was just that she had been fighting nonstop every day, consuming so much energy that she had still ended up thinner than she was back in Shengdu.
Xiao Heng’s lips curved into a smile as his fingertips slowly caressed her chin. “Is this the consequences of longing for someone, Gu JiaoJiao?”
Gu Jiao: “…!!”
Where on earth did this guy learn to flirt like that all of a sudden!
Gu Jiao pouted, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Aren’t you thinner too? Were you missing me that badly?”
Come on, be embarrassed, my guy!
But to her surprise, Xiao Heng merely smiled softly, his eyes locking deeply with hers. “There’s a beauty I cannot forget. One day apart feels like madness.”
Gu Jiao’s delicate body trembled.
Err!
When did he become so smooth?!
Xiao Heng looked at the shock written all over her face and couldn’t help laughing inside.
After all, he was about to properly marry her; he couldn’t keep blushing just because she teased him a little like in the past.
He had grown up.
He was going to be her man now.
——And it definitely wasn’t because he had secretly practiced on the way here.
The winter wind was sharp and harsh as a blade, and Gu Jiao’s fingertips were frozen stiff.
Xiao Heng took off his silver fox cloak and draped it over Gu Jiao’s shivering little frame. The cloak still carried his body warmth and familiar scent; it was warm and comforting.
Gu Jiao took a deep breath, and warmth slowly spread throughout her entire body.
Xiao Heng raised his slender fingers and carefully tied the silk ribbons of the cloak one by one, then pulled up the hood and gently placed it over her dazed and frozen little head.
Gu Jiao looked behind him and asked in confusion, “Hm? But where’s Long Yi?”
“He’s gone.” Xiao Heng replied.
On a snowy morning, when he opened his eyes, Long Yi was already gone.
Long Yi had only stayed long enough to bring him to safety before disappearing.
Long Yi was probably now off to find his own memories and answers.
“Oh.” Gu Jiao lowered her eyes, a faint trace of disappointment in them.
These days, she was becoming increasingly capable of feeling more and more emotions, and some of them made her feel sadness.
Pa.
Her forehead rested gently against his firm chest.
Xiao Heng lifted his strong arm, and in the cold wind, he softly wrapped it around her. “It’s alright. I believe that one day, we’ll see Long Yi again.”
Gu Jiao replied, “Mm.”
……
Meanwhile, Wenren Chong, Li Shen, and Zhao Dengfeng had come to the well to fetch water. From a distance, they spotted two figures embracing. One was clearly a man, while the other was cloaked, but judging by the military boots, he was certainly a soldier from the camp.
In broad daylight, two grown men were acting all lovey-dovey out here. What sort of example was that!
This was simply——
The three of them rolled up their sleeves, ready to drag the pair out and bring them before the military tribunal. But then Li Shen suddenly paused mid-step. “Is that… the young commander?”
Zhao Dengfeng and Wenren Chong squinted hard for a clearer look.
Oh no, that faintly revealed side profile beneath the cloak… wasn’t that unmistakably their young commander?
He, he, he——
Wenren Chong, standing in the middle, was the first to raise his hand and cover the other two’s eyes.
And almost simultaneously, Li Shen and Zhao Dengfeng each lifted one of their own hands and reached over to cover Wenren Chong’s eyes.
Gu Jiao, nestled in Xiao Heng’s arms, felt thoroughly warm and cozy.
Xiao Heng lowered his head slightly, and with a teasing lilt in his voice, softly whispered in her ear, “Your subordinates saw us.”
What she didn’t see was that the tips of his ears had turned slightly red.
But in just a moment, the cold wind brushed away the flush.
Gu Jiao lifted her head from his chest and looked around. Sure enough, on the open ground to the right, she saw the three former generals awkwardly covering one another’s eyes in an utterly bizarre pose.
“Oh.” Without the slightest change in her expression, Gu Jiao straightened up, looked toward the three of them, and said calmly, “Li Shen, Wenren Chong, Zhao Dengfeng, come greet His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson.”
The three of them staggered and tumbled to the ground in unison!
What the heck?
The young commander’s male lover was the Eldest Imperial Grandson?!
They scrambled several times before finally managing to get up from the snow, then shuffled forward in extreme embarrassment to stand before Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng.
Just moments ago, they were saying those two should be punished by military law, and now it turned out one was their young commander and the other the Eldest Imperial Grandson——
The three of them kept their eyes forward and gave a formal salute.
“Li Shen greets His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson.”
“Wenren Chong greets His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson.”
“Zhao Dengfeng greets His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson.”
Xiao Heng met their gazes calmly, and in an unhurried tone, he said, “Old subordinates of the Xuanyuan Family. I saw your names in the library archives.”
The three were instantly overwhelmed by the honor.
Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, on the other hand, remained perfectly composed, showing no trace of embarrassment at being caught, which instead made the three of them start to doubt themselves. Perhaps they were the ones thinking too impurely and reading too much into it.
Maybe His Highness and the young commander were just close as brothers——
And then, in the very next moment, His Highness, who was supposedly “just a brother,” took their young commander by the hand and walked away right in front of them.
The three were left frozen on the spot.
“Bring over the water.” Xiao Heng said.
“Ah… ah, yes!” Zhao Dengfeng was the first to react. He responded at once, and bracing himself, he carried the water bucket over.
He set the bucket down and immediately fled, not daring to linger even a second longer.
Back at the well, Zhao Dengfeng clutched his wildly pounding chest and let out a heavy sigh. “The young commander… how pitiful. To have fallen for a man.”
For once, Li Shen didn’t argue. “And not just any man, a man completely out of reach.”
Zhao Dengfeng shook his head. “A man out of reach… and not long for this world.”
“Achoo!”
Over at the City Lord’s residence, Shangguan Qing sneezed hard.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
